Sóldögg

Sóldögg was officially formed in 1995. The name Sóldögg (Sundew), decided by lead singer Beggi, is the name of a meat-eating plant and it doesn’t hurt that a handful of beautiful women also go by that name. They put together a program and played their first gig in Hard Rock Café in Reykjavík.

In 1996 Sóldögg released five songs on an EP called Klám (Porn). A few of the songs got some air play especially the song Loft. The band kept writing new songs and touring the country.

In the spring of 1997 they released the single Friður on the compilation album Pottþétt 8 and the single Leysist upp was released on the compilation album Bandalög 7. Sóldögg also had music videos made for these songs and they both became very popular. The band signed with record label Skífan in 1997 and released the album Breyt’um lit (Changing Colour) before Christmas. The album was a hit and many of it’s singles climbed the charts.

In the summer of ’98 Sóldögg released two original songs on the compilation album Svona er sumarið (Summer Hits). Both songs got extensive air play and one of them; Fínt lag did very well in the charts and the other one; Yfir allt was the most played Icelandic song on national station Radio 2 in 1998. Oktober 5th 1998 Sóldögg released an album bearing the band’s name. Three singles; Villtur, Lifi áfram, and Geng í hringi became very popular and climbed the charts. A remix of Lifi áfram was also made.

Sóldögg rearranged and played the song Bíddu pabbi which was released on an album dedicated to the memory of singer Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson in 1999. The song was very popular and got the most airplay of all the singles on the best-selling album. In the summer of 1999 the band released two singles; Fæ aldrei frið og Bara þig on the compilation album Svona er sumarið. They also made a music video for the latter single.

The next summer Sóldögg was asked to rearrange Frankie Valli’s Can’t Keep My Eyes Off of You, with Icelandic lyrics by Þorsteinn Eggerts, called Hef ekki augun af þér for a movie called Íslenski draumurinn (The Icelandic Dream) . They did and the song raced to number 5 on the Icelandic Pop Chart and stayed there for two weeks. Sóldögg also rearranged the song Fisk og franskar from the movie Með allt á hreinu (On Top) which was released on an album with the same name.

November 1st 2000 Sóldögg released their newest album Popp (Pop), introducing 10 new songs. The song Ekki fara which was extremely popular late in the summer of 2001 was released on the compilation album Popp Frelsi (Pop Freedom) which was sold to benefit alcoholics support organisation SÁÁ.
