Steinunn Birna Ragnarsdóttir was born in Reykjavík and began her studies at the Reykjavik Music Academy when she was eleven years old. She graduated as a piano teacher in 1979 and finished her solo performer’s examination two years later.
Steinunn graduated with an M.A. degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 1987. For a while she worked as a soloist in Spain and played with a few chamber groups.
There she received the Gran Podium award from Juventuts del Musicals in Barcelona and performed at various international music festivals around Spain.

In 1993 Steinunn appeared at WGBH on a show that was broadcast around the USA and other places. She presented Icelandic music and played a solo piece for piano by Chopin and Schumann. The same year she had a solo performance in Iceland but she has also had concerts in Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, France, America, Germany and England.

In 1995 she played a piano concerto in a – minor by Grieg with the Icelandic Symphony. The perfomance was recorded and released on an album. Steinunn Birna has played many concerts in Iceland for the last few years. She has been commended for her artistry and praised by critics. She has performed under the auspices of Reykjavík Art Festival, The Music Association, The Chamber Music Club etc.

Steinunn Birna has made radio programs for Iceland´s national radio about pianists called Þeir vísuðu veginn (They Lead the Way). She has also recorded albums with Bryndís halla Gylfadóttir and recently their album Ljóð án orða (Poems Without Words) got an Icelandic Music Award.
Steinunn Birna recently performed a piano concerto by Jórunn Viðar with the Icelandic Symphony. She also performed at the Alma Mater music festival in Vilnius and appeared as a soloist with the St Cristopher orchestra. Steinunn Birna works as a musician and at Tónlistarskólinn í Reykjavík. She has been artistic supervisor of the Reykholts festival since it was established in 1997. The festival takes place the last weekend of July every year in Reykholt in Borgarfjörður.
