Rúnar Júlíusson
Rúnar Júlíusson is born in Keflavík on April 13th 1945. When he was only five years old he recorded the hymn Ó Jesú bróðir besti on a tape for his grandfather.
More than 30 years later the recording was cleaned up and released on an album and it was noted even at this early age, Rúnar had a pure voice and could carry a tune. When legendary band Hljómar was formed, guitarist Gunnar Þórðarson was badly in need of a bass player.
He went to Rúnar, who had never touched a bass in his life, and within a week he was rehearsing like a madman. Gunnar suspected that the boy was very gifted when it came to music. Later Rúnar came to be regarded as one of the best bass players in Iceland. According to popular legend, Rúnar didnt sleep the first three or four years after he joined Hljómar. In addition to being in a band that travelled the country playing every night, he was also chosen to play in the national football team and was building himself a great big house.
Despite all this activity, Rúnar never looked tired. He was a very lively performer and used to jump up onto the amplifiers and dance around like crazy while he played and sang. In his free time he wrote songs and lyrics. In 1976, after being a member of popular bands Hljómar, Trúbrot and Lónlí Blú Bojs,he formed his own label, Geimsteinn.
The label is still active and has released more than a hundred albums. Rúnar also has his own recording studio, Upptökuheimilið. It has mainly been run by Rúnar himself, even when he was playing with Bubbi Morthens in the band G.C.D., and hes still at it. In 1996 it was discovered that Rúnar was born with a heart defect and had to have an operation. But it didnt hold him back for long - this fun loving bad boy is indestructable.
