Margrét Eir

Margrét Eir was born August 1st 1972. She started to sing in a school choir when she was 6 or 7 years old. Later she studied singing at the Reykjavik Music Academy. 
In 1989 she went the USA as an exchange student and took part in a musical production for the first time. She played Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar.
In 1991 she won a College Singing Contest and that got her career started. She was asked to sing a song by Axel Einarsson in the Icelandic preliminary contest to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992 and a song by Þórir Baldursson in the same contest in 1993.

She was the singer in band Svartur Pipar (Black Pepper) for three years and they played in almost every club and pub in Iceland.
In 1994 she took part in the musical production of Hair and sang the song Aquarius and other solo numbers. The musical was shown 90 times in July through to December 1994.

Margrét then moved to Boston to study drama at Emerson College and graduated with a B.F.A. degree in acting and musical theatre. After graduation, she worked for a while in New York City, but was then asked to come back to Iceland to play the lesbian lawyer Joanna in a production of the musical Rent. She also acted in S.O.S. Kabarettinn and children’s play Glanni glæpur. She has sung at weddings, birthdays, television shows and concerts with various artists. Margrét has also sung in adverts and been a back up singer.
In 1999 she began teaching drama, song and dance in Tónlistarskóli Árbæjar music school. In 2000 Margrét released her first solo album Meir (More). The musicians who played with her on the album were guitar player and producer Kristján Eldjárn, Rhodes pianist Karl Olgeirsson, bass player Jón Rafnsson and drummer Birgir Baldursson. The songs were all cover versions in English. They also released the song Slá í gegn on a tribute album to popular band Stuðmenn.  Margrét often sings at weddings now and appears now and again as a guest with Lúðrasveit reykjavíkur (brass band), Gospel Choir of Árbæjarkirkja (chuch choir) and others. She is currently appearing in the musical production of Grease in Reykjavik Municipial Theatre.
