Pláhnetan

Pláhnetan was formed in the spring of 1993 by Stefán Hilmarsson, Friðrik Sturluson, Ingólfur Guðjónsson and Sigurður Gröndal. Stefán had been writing songs with Ingólfur and Sigurður and was going to use them on the solo album he was planning.
There was a good vibe within the group and they wrote song after song and saw that they had enough material for an album and even more than that. They got on so well together that they decided to form a band and record the songs together.
At this time Stefán and Friðrik’s band Sálin hans Jóns míns was on a long break so they were free to do as they pleased. Ingólfur og Sigurður had just left their band Loðin rotta so they had plenty of time too. All they needed was a drummer and they hired Ingólfur Sigurðsson who had played with the bands Síðan skein sól and Rauðir fletir.

Pláhnetan went to record label boss Steinar Berg and got his consent to make an album, then to the studio to record their songs. The album Speis (Space) was released in June.  The songs all revolved around the concept of space. The album was well received and some of the songs became very popular, e.g. Funheitur which was the most popular song in the country for a while. The band toured the country to promote the album and played in many towns and villages. In the fall Stefán released his solo album Líf (Life) and was assisted by the members of Pláhnetan in making it. The band continued to play together in the winter and in the summer of 1994 they released the album Plast (Plastic). Now Jakob S. Magnússon had replaced bass player Friðrik. He had played with the bands Síðan skein sól and Tappi tíkarrass. Plast was a little rougher than the first album even though its most popular song was the ballad Ég vissi það which Stefán sang with legendary singer Björgvin Halldórsson.
The band kept playing at all kinds occasions and in the fall they released the song Sæla which Emiliana Torrini sang with Stefán. This was also the last song recorded by Pláhnetan because Sálin hans Jóns míns started playing again in 1995.
